Class Descriptions
American Accent - 9 am - 4 pm Saturday 10/23:

Have you lived in the US for years yet still not mastered the American Accent? Have you always wanted to learn to speak in a way that Americans immediately understand? This workshop identifies the key components of what it takes to speak "American English." You will learn how to:
· Avoid being asked to repeat what you say
· Recognize your own specific speech issues and correct them
· Identify strategies to improve your speech based on your first language
· Reinvoke the "brain plasticity" of a child learning a language using the "rubberband" technique
· Use knowledge of how American articulation and word stress patterns differ from most other languages and dialects
· Use breath and mouth movement to support your changes
· Find mindful ways to practice that create lasting change without boredom
· Apply these techniques and strategies to your profession and career goals immediately
Rebecca Linquist, President & Founder of English by the Hour, has pioneered a program that helps non-native speakers of American English transform their speaking skills in as little as two months. Rebecca specializes in creating lasting behavioral change in the spoken English of adults.

Overcome Cultural Barriers to Success - 9 am - 4 pm Saturday 11/13:
Acculturating in the world of American business is a challenging process. If you find yourself struggling to influence others or be heard, this is the course for you. Specifically, this course will help you to:
· Build relationships by moving away from transactional communication
· Use collaborative language to increase influence and teamwork
· Actively engage in meetings and presentations to be "heard"
· Learn techniques to help listeners "perceive" you are speaking slowly even if you are not
· Become aware of your own cultural preferences and evaluate how best to strategically approach a situation in a way that aligns you with the company's or the individual's culture
· Give feedback and manage crucial conversations
